Roland E. Davis, 77, of 227 S. Union Street, Galion, died Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at Village Care Center, Galion, after a long illness.
Born June 11, 1926 in Columbiana Co., Ohio, he was the son of the late Harry Henderson Davis Mary Elma (Keely) Davis. On April 16, 1949 he married Carol Jean (Cooper) Davis and she survives.
He was a graduate of Marion Harding High School and was a member of Gospel Baptist Church in Galion. He worked for the railroad for 38 years as a conductor for Erie, Erie Lackawanna and Conrail. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #6817 in Mt. Victory and the United Transportation Union. He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. He liked to read, travel and tell stories. He was really proud of his time in the U.S. Navy during World War II and helped liberate the South of France. He was a member of the Tin Can Sailors of the National Association of Destroyer Veterans. He lived in Marion from 1964 to 1987, in Greenville, S.C. from 1987 to 1994 and in Galion from 1994 to present.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Tom Jeffers, of Galion, Becky and Bob Compton, of Rochester, Mich. and Keely and Craig Ault, of Marion; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald Davis and his companion Terry Troppman, of Carlsbad, Calif., James and Karen Davis, of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Mark and Sue Davis, of Marion, nine grandchildren, Mary and Matt Jeffers, Kathy and Billy Davis, Brandi and Brittany Compton, Megan and Molly Davis and Andrew Ault; a brother and sister-in-law, Harry G. and Phyllis Davis, of Martinsburg, W. Va. and his step-brother and spouse, Clyde and Jenny Davis, of East Liverpool, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his aunt and uncle that raised him after the death of his mother, Howard and Esther Hildebrand.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, January 25, 2004 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 26, with Rev. Monty Trammel and Rev. C.L. Fuqua officiating. Interment will be in Caledonia Cemetery.
