Ruth M. Ulmer Gill, 90, of Oakleaf Village, 5500 Karl Road, Columbus, OH 43229, formerly of 102 Switzer Drive, Galion, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at St. Ann's Hospital, Westerville.
Born September 10, 1913 in Galion, she was the daughter of the late Alexander D. Diamond and Dorothy (Shuls) Diamond. She is survived by her husband William E. Gill, whom she married September 15, 2001. She was previously married to Grant A. Ulmer, April 19, 1945. He preceded her in death December 13, 1999.
She was a graduate of Galion High School in 1931 and Mansfield Commercial Institute and worked for a short time in Shelby before beginning work at Galion Iron Works & Mfg. Co. in Galion as a private secretary. She was a resident of Galion all of her life until she and her husband, Grant, moved to Galena in 1994 to live with their daughter and son-in-law.
Ruth grew up in the former First Reformed Church, where she sang in the choir, was a Sunday school teacher and active in the Bethany Guild. She later became a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Galion, from 1943 until 2002 where she has served as Chairman of the Women's Board, as a teacher in the Sunday School at various levels, as a teacher of Adult Education for the Bethel Series, as a member of Sarah Circle and the Church Sewing Group who made quilts for Lutheran World Relief.
She was a 50 year member of Naomi Chapter #47, Order of Eastern Star.
She was formerly active and held offices in various clubs in Galion, among them the Arts and Crafts Club, Tourists Literary Club, Junior Child Conservation League, Galion Study Club and Galion Sorosis.
She served for a number of years on the Crawford County Mental Health Board and was an officer in the Crawford County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, genealogy being a hobby which she and her husband pursued for many years in both the United States and abroad.
She was a member of a hooking group in Shelby which exhibited their work at various craft shows in the area.
She was a long time member of the Galion Community Hospital Auxiliary and the first Chairman of the original T.W.I.G. 8, which was well known for its sales of woolen remnants and Bazaar candy.
Over the years she and her husband, Grant traveled to a number of foreign countries and shared their travel experiences, illustrated by slides, to many local groups including clubs, church groups and classes of school children.
Most recently she has been a member of Church of the Messiah United Methodist Church in Westerville.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Quentin Haines, of Westerville; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Christine (Eichhorn) Ulmer, of Bolton, Mass.; five step children and their spouses, Sandra and Ed Clark, of Ashville, N.C., Shirley Close, of Columbus, Mary Anne and Tom Asbury, of West Chester, David & Toni Gill, of Columbus and Mark and Caroline McGlone, of Columbus; three grandchildren, Blake Ulmer, Lindsey Ulmer and Allison Haines; nine step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2004 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 28, at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Karl Ribbeck and Rev. Harold B. Steindam officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
